The village of Ramsden Crays is between Little Burstead and Wickford, and includes Crays Hill.  It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Ramesdana’.

It appears that ‘Ramsden’ means ‘garlic valley’, or ‘rams valley’ as suggested on Wikipedia.  In 1257 Simon de Creye took over the area.
