Hurlocks, a 400-year-old house that once stood on Billericay’s High Street, had a reputation for being haunted long before its demolition in 1958. Its crumbling, ruinous state only made it easier to imagine the spirits within.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a Miss E.S. Bayly spent a troubled night in the house’s “spare room.” Years later, a ghost was seen looking out of a window even though the house was completely empty. Today, the site where the eerie house once stood is occupied by The Blue Boar pub.
