North Benfleet is one of the oldest corners of the district, a quiet rural parish where the fields, lanes, and ancient church seem to hold memories far older than the modern roads around them. The most famous tale centres on the wood near Fanton Hall, long known as Shrieking Boy’s Wood. According to local tradition, a young plough‑boy was murdered there, and his ghost was said to haunt the trees. For generations, people reported hearing terrifying screams echoing through the wood at night — sudden, sharp cries that rose and fell as though the boy were still calling out in pain. Some claimed to see a lone figure sitting on the gate, silent and unmoving, before fading into the darkness. The story became one of the most chilling in the district, giving the wood its grim name and reputation.

Another haunting tells of the vanishing girl on the road near the village. A couple driving through North Benfleet believed they had struck a young girl who appeared suddenly in front of their car. They stopped in panic, searched the road and the verges, but found nothing — no injured child, no sign of anyone at all. Only later did they realise that the figure had simply disappeared, leaving behind one of the area’s most unsettling modern ghost sightings.

North Benfleet also carries the eerie tale of the spectral bells of All Saints Church. One evening, the bells were heard ringing clearly across the village — despite the fact that they were no longer in use. The sound was unmistakable: a full peal echoing through the air, as though the church were calling out to a congregation that no longer existed. When locals checked the tower, they found everything still and silent.
