One of Wickford’s best‑known stories is the ghostly hitchhiker, said to haunt the roads since the 1960s. According to local accounts, the spirit is that of a young girl killed in a motorcycle accident while travelling to Southend. Drivers spoke of seeing her by the roadside, trying to hitch a lift, only for her to vanish before reaching the car. Her story became one of Wickford’s most enduring modern legends, a reminder of a journey tragically cut short.

Another long‑standing tale centres on the black dog of the graveyard. For generations, children believed a large, spectral hound prowled the old Congregational Church burial ground. They would run past the site, convinced the ghostly dog might appear from the shadows. The story became part of local childhood folklore — simple, frightening, and persistent.

Wickford also held the legend of the lady of Beeches Cottages, once standing at the corner of Wick Lane and Southend Road. According to the tale, the spirit belonged to a woman who had been cruelly refused food at the nearby Rectory.
