Historic Billericay hides a darker side beneath its High Street charm.  

Behind the Georgian façades and quiet lanes linger tales of restless spirits, tragic deaths, and unexplained presences that have haunted the town for generations.

At the old police station, staff have long spoken of the ghostly inspector who died in the line of duty — his spirit said to wander the corridors, moving objects and greeting the living with a polite “good morning.”
Nearby, the vanished Hurlocks House was once notorious for its spectral figure at the window, a ghost that remained even after the building fell to ruin.
And at Burghstead Lodge, the chilling story of the Lady in the Green Silk Gown endures — a veiled apparition who appeared at midnight beside a dying man, her face revealed to be a death’s head beneath the bonnet.

Other hauntings ripple through the town’s history: the Lady in White who once walked the old Post Office site, the eerie footsteps at St Aubyns, and the Grey Lady of the former workhouse, whose name still marks the street today.

Each story adds another layer to Billericay’s haunted heritage — reminders that even in a place of light and life, the past sometimes refuses to rest.
