The A13 at Vange is said to be haunted by a ghost. In an interview with the Thurrock Gazette on 26th September 1969, John Howard, the former licensee of the Five Bells Inn, described his experiences.

He said there was always a lot of talk about a ghost in the pub, and on several occasions he saw it himself from an upstairs bedroom. After first hearing a thumping noise, he saw a pure white ghost coming down the A13 from the direction of Vange Church. It then disappeared near the Fobbing rail crossing.

Mr. Howard remained a firm believer, stating, "I know I saw it and nobody will ever convince me different."
